About Us
Setting the standard since 1937.
The trusted building partner for quality craftsmanship and exceptional care. Based in Portland, Oregon, and tackling the toughest projects nationwide.
Timeline
The Beginning
At the tail end of The Great Depression, Andy Schommer begins buying foreclosed lots and building new homes throughout the Portland metropolitan area.
Wartime
Andy pauses work to serve in the U.S. Military from 1943-1947, marrying Margaret soon after discharge. She joins him in Oregon and runs the company office out of their home.
Spreading Service
The company expands from residential builds into remodeling and light commercial work, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and service.
Innovation & Education
As the expansion into commercial and industrial construction continues, so does the push for innovation. Schommer becomes the first company in Oregon to install Trus Joist products, in a new elementary school for Portland’s Holy Cross Parish — one of more than 30 local schools Andy Schommer built in his career.
The Second Generation
Andy Schommer’s sons Steve, Craig, and Bob join the company, officially incorporating as “A.C. Schommer & Sons” in 1975.
Sandy Boulevard
After Andy’s death in 1983, his wife and sons continue his legacy of craftsmanship and service. Moving the office from the family home to Sandy Boulevard, they begin taking on larger building and remodeling projects for Electro Scientific Industries, Pepsicola, Nabisco, Hilton Portland Downtown, and the Archdiocese of Portland. The company gains national recognition for the completion of the Rockwood House.
Colwood Way
Now one of the 15 largest builders in the Portland area, the company branches into telecommunications infrastructure and moves into a larger office on Colwood Way. Other notable projects from this time include the Middle Fork Nooksack River Diversion Dam, Oregon Catholic Press, Lemelson Vineyards, and the restoration of Portland’s St. Mary’s Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
The Telecom Team
With a specialized telecommunications team, the company continues building cell towers across Oregon and out of state. In 2001, Schommer & Sons receives the Build America Award for construction management of the Portland Classical Chinese Garden, later renamed Lan Su Chinese Garden.
Build America
After weathering the 2008 recession, Schomer & Sons continues its growth trajectory with renewed energy from up-and-coming builders, receiving its second Build America Award for the Clubhouse at Domaine Serene.
Looking Forward
Now in the third generation of family leadership, Schommer & Sons continues to build complex structures, maintain rigorous schedules, and push the boundaries of innovation — all with integrity and a passion for craftsmanship.
